Why Programming Language "C" is Necessary For Mechanical Engineers
Learning computer programming is essential for engineering students these days. Various CAD and CAM softwares are to be handled by the engineers, as almost all the projects are designed with CAD software and CAM software and have a significant role in the manufacturing processes. There are many programming languages that need to be learned by the mechanical engineer students. These include FORTRAN, Matlab, C and C++ etc. How many of these may be taught to the aspirant mechanical engineers in only 8 or 10 periods allotted in the curriculum of undergraduate mechanical engineering courses? Then which language should be taught in this short duration?
Various programming languages are included in the curriculum of mechanical engineering courses. Assembly languages are taught to them to make them familiar with the hardware interface. C programming language is taught as structured programming language and is useful for developing the hardware interface applications. In the last year of the undergraduate mechanical courses C++, an objected oriented programming language is included. Which computer language should be emphasized on during this limited period?
No doubt, C language is must for all the mechanical engineer students. Matlab language used for mathematical programming was preferred since 1998 and was replaced by FORTRAN. The FORTRAN language ruined the mechanical engineering courses since 1998 and was one of the four languages for the undergraduate students of mechanical engineering. However the FORTRAN language was not capable of meeting all the needs of engineers and that was the reason the BC was introduced in the curriculum. It was learned from the experience that the student who were well versed in the programming with Malabo were not capable of handling research projects. So, in most of the academic institutions, the programming language BC was induced in the curriculum in 2003. Why "BC" was preferred over the other programming languages.

The reason is that the BC language supports 64-bit computing and adheres to the international standards that are supported by the major computing industry companies. On the other hand, Matlab is a proprietary language used in mathematical programming. Certainly the technology that is open to all is better than a proprietary of any one. Just guess the popularity of C. According to statistic shown by some reports, the language C holds the second position in Programming Community Index with 16.8 percent of the market, next to the Java, the another programming language used for E-commerce on the Internet. The Matlab is nowhere available in the index.
Why the programming language C is preferred for the mechanical engineer curriculum? The C language is much preferred language for hardware interfaces. This is the language that is used for the embedded software for the various home appliances. Did you ever realize this while changing the channels of your TV with your remote? May your wife know that she is using software written in C while using computerized washing machine or microwave oven?

7 Tips on How to Gain Self Confidence
There are no secrets in this world. There are only things we do no know at this point in time. And when you DO know it, it's not a secret anymore. This leads me to tell you that there is only one way to truly gain self confidence. This is by a process. You must realize that gaining confidence has almost never happened overnight. Of course there are always exceptions to everything in this world. Learning how to gain self confidence is a process and I want to tell you 7 really great tips on how to gain self confidence.
Tip #1:
Don't care what other people think. I know you may think "How am I supposed to do that?". Well the fact is that you can't change what anybody else thinks. Imagine you are at a public gathering and you have really low self confidence at that point in time. You come home and you feel really bad because you thought you where judged by other people. Your best friend James, thought the same thing when he came home. Judith thought exactly the same thing. The point is, people care more about themselves than they care about you. So inevitably don't care what other people think of you. You are not put on this planet to please all. It's OK to fail, it's OK to be different, it's OK to do what you feel is right for you!
7 Tips on How to Gain Self Confidence
Tip #2:
Allow being judged. This is something that can be really hard, but guess what. In order to boost self confidence to great heights, you must be able to do things your way and be OK with other people disliking what you do. Again, almost everybody in the world judges people, I judge people for sure. If somebody tells me that I am something negative that I know I am. Let's say ugly, or fat... I can simply laugh it off and say, "So what, I can't change my genes and this is the way I am, do you have something else you want to judge me by, please get it off your chest?". See there is nothing a person can say to you that you can't counter in one way or another.
Tip #3:
Have really strong beliefs. The two tips above come down to one thing and that is having a strong self belief and solid ground in your confidence. There are many exercises you can take in order to really learn how to gain self confidence. You must get your beliefs in order first, otherwise you will always have a doubt in your mind somewhere. People are experts at destroying their own beliefs by having negative thoughts. STOP negative thoughts now.
Tip #4:
Writing your goals down on paper. People who fail will write their goals down once, look at them, put pen and paper down and then forget about it. People who have learnt how to gain self confidence proceed with their goals and never ever quit. I know this may sound harsh right now, but quitters remain quitters until they believe they can be winners. Be a winner.
Tip #5:
Be a winner. Even if you lose at one point in time be a winner. Even if somebody totally humiliates you, you are a winner. Why? Simply because everybody is a winner. Everybody is good at something. The reason you have low self confidence is because you have been programmed to believe something that isn't true... at all. Maybe people around you have told you that you are worthless or too stupid to do something. Guess what, you are not, you are a winner. You are a winner because you know that if you set your mind to do something you will obtain this goal. You have done it before, every single time. You just don't know it.
Tip #6:
Have extreme determination and faith. Know that if you have set your mind to do something you will obtain it. Maybe not tomorrow or the next day. Maybe not in 1 week or even 1 year. Learning how to gain self confidence takes time. Some people get over these negative thoughts and gain amazing self confidence in only 10 days. For some people the programming has taken much harder and it takes them 2 months. Maybe you are so deep into it that it takes 5 years? Even if it takes 5 years, when that day comes and you know when you are there, you will feel that 5 years was worth it.
Tip #7:
Patience. Learning how to gain self confidence is like fishing with a fishing rod, in a way. Let me explain. have you ever tried to fish with a fishing rod and you see something happen. You reel in to see if something happened. You find the fish has broke lose. You get pissed and throw it back in the water. This happens 5-10 times before you catch anything. In the mean time your friend is pulling up the fish every single time and he is laughing of joy. He is patient... he knows that when the fish bites, it takes a little bit of time before the hook is 100% attached. The point here is that, if something doesn't work for you, throw the rod back in and try again. When you want to give up the most, you know you are the closest!

If you cut out the hype, the simple message is if you believe in yourself enough you can achieve anything.
A memorable one-liner was "the only thing that's keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself".
2. MOST PEOPLE HAVE SELF-DOUBT AROUND UNIVERSAL THEMES.
Ask anyone and most people will admit they lack confidence in some areas of their life. The interesting thing I learnt from this seminar is that this self-doubt is around universal themes. These themes cross age, gender, religious, cultural and language barriers.
Common doubts include 'I am not good enough', 'I am lazy' and 'No-one loves me'.
3. YOU CAN LEARN MECHANISMS TO ELIMINATE SELF-DOUBT.
Robbins calls it 'immersion' where you break old patterns and build new ones by repetition. He uses a lot of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques to achieve this with his audiences.
He says "progress is not automatic".
A memorable moment in the seminar was when we had to visualize ourselves inside a bubble and inside that bubble was a series of videotapes neatly arranged in a time-line that represented all our memories in our lives so far. We had to pull out the negative videotapes and destroy them. This was followed by time spent visualising the future and how your life will look 10 and 20 years from now.
4. BELIEF IMPACTS ON MANY LEVELS.
The Robbins message was that 3 things shape our self-belief. He calls them the Triad. These are our patterns of physiology, focus and language or meaning.

Robbins believes you can "vanquish whatever is holding you back from taking action".

6. TO CREATE POSITIVE OUTCOMES YOU MUST TAKE MASSIVE ACTION.
"Where focus goes energy flows" is a quote used by Robbins in his presentation to highlight why you need to know your outcome and why achieving this is a must.
But many people fail to take the next step. They delay, put off and find many reasons or excuses not to act.
Robbins believes "progress is not automatic" and "action is power". Take action, even if it is the wrong action. He says it is "never a failure if you learn something".

He believes "rapport is power" and "total responsiveness is created by a feeling of commonality".

8. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU FOCUS ON PASSION AND PURPOSE.
Robbins believes that "to have an extraordinary quality of life you need two skills: the science of achievement (the ability to take anything you envision and make it real) and the art of fulfilment (this allows you to enjoy every moment of it)."
He says "success without fulfilment is failure".
Find your passion and purpose in life. My purpose is to make a difference in people's lives and use my gift as a speaker.
9. MODEL YOURSELF ON OTHER ACHIEVERS.
To gain improvements quickly and step up to a new level of achievement, Robbins believes learning from others who are the best in their field is the fastest way to achieve success.
He told the story of how he wanted to improve his tennis game and so employed Andre Agassi, the then number one ranked player to help him achieve this.

Access Visual Basic and Excel VBA Macros - A Comparison of the MS Office Programming Languages
Similarities between Excel VBA and Access VBA
In theory it should be easy to switch from one MS Office VBA programming language to another, since all the underlying principles are the same. It doesn't matter whether you're writing VBA macros within Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint or Word, you're still using:
- objects, collections, methods and properties

- variables (the DIM statement)
- IF conditions and loops
- message boxes and input boxes
- subroutines and functions
In fact, the only thing which is different is the object and collections defined within the application. So how hard can it be to switch from (say) Excel VBA to Access VBA? The answer, sadly, is... fairly hard. Here's why!
Differences between Excel Visual Basic and Access Visual Basic
The main differences between the two programming languages are that Access supports two macro languages, doesn't support recording, has two different ways to create Visual Basic macros, hides a lot of its functionality in the DoCmd object and has two separate object models. If that didn't make much sense, worry not - the rest of this article will explain each of these points in turn.
Access has Two Macro Languages
This is a red herring. Microsoft Access has two separate languages for writing macros: one called macros, the other called either modules or Visual Basic. If you have any knowledge of VBA, you should ignore the first; it is provided for people who have no programming experience, and doesn't support proper looping, error-handling and many other structures. So although the Access database window contains a MACROS tab, you should ignore this completely!
Access doesn't Support Recording
Want to know how to colour a cell red with pink spots in Excel? If you can't guess the macro command (unlikely), you can just record a macro and have a look at the resulting code. This is a vital aide-memoire even when you're a VBA guru.
Access, on the other hand, doesn't support recording - not even in the latest version at the time of writing, Access 2010. This is, to say the least, a shame (interestingly, while Word supports VBA recording, PowerPoint doesn't any more: Microsoft removed the facility from version 2007 onwards). This means that you're often forced to resort to Google, Microsoft help or phoning a friend to find out how to do something in Access VBA.
Two Different Ways to Write Macros in Access
Want to create a VBA macro in Access? To do this, you need to go to the VBA code editor. Strangely, you can do this in two different ways: either press ALT + F11 as normal, or click on the Modules tab in the database window and choose to create a new module. Why are there two different ways to do the same thing? Historical reasons, we think.
Access Uses the DoCmd Object for Many Commands
Access VBA is complicated (or simplified?) by the fact that about half the commands begin with DoCmd. For example:
DoCmd.OpenForm - to open a form
DoCmd.Maximize - to maximise a window
Features like this make Excel a far more logical programming language than Access.
Access has Two Separate Object Models
Excel is pretty self-contained (although if you're creating your own dialog boxes, you'll be using a separate applications called Microsoft Forms). Access, however, splits into two almost equal parts:
- tables and queries are part of the Access database engine
- forms, reports, macros and modules are part of the Microsoft Access application
Although you'll probably only hit this complication when you get into advanced programming in Access, it's another Access feature to muddy the VBA water.
In summary, then, we'd say that Excel macros are far more straightforward than Access ones. Added to this is the fact that it's much quicker to learn Excel than it is to learn Access, and you get two unequal learning curves!

How to Adjust Small Block Chevy Lifters
I got thinking and it came to me, I had never done an article on how to adjust small block Chevy lifters, so this article is going to make up for my transgressions of the past, I think people need to know this information if they have small block, or for that matter a big block Chevy.
I've written on almost every subject related to the restoration of a car, but never this subject, so please forgive me, and allow me to show you what I know on this subject, there is nothing illusive about adjusting the lifters on a small block Chevy engine, or for the matter a big bock either.
First of all if your installing a new camshaft, you should absolutely follow the recommendations of the camshaft manufacture, this article is based off of standard adjustment values and the camshaft that you are installing may be different.
How to Adjust Small Block Chevy Lifters
Things will change a bit depending on the type of camshaft that you have in your engine, you need to know a few things, first of all is the camshaft a solid, or hydraulic lifter version, solid lifters cams are also called flat tappet cams.
One good simple way to tell is to grab one of the push rods and push it down, if you can make the push rod move down, you have a hydraulic cam, a solid lifter cam you can't push the lifter down at all, once you have determined what lifters you have you can begin the adjusting process.
Of course this is all assuming that you have removed the valve covers, on a small block Chevy this is done by loosening the two bolts on the top of the valve cover, and the two bolts on the bottom, unless the valve covers are the new style with four bolts in the centre, then you need to remove them.
Tools You Need:
A 5/8 socket Ratchet Feeler gauges
You'll need the tools in the list above to adjust your lifters, the first thing you'll need to do is, if your adjusting hydraulic lifters you'll need to get the feeler gauge and unfold the one that says .030 on it, this is what you'll be setting the lifters to, if the cam is solid lifter get out the .026 gauge.
What your doing here is setting that back lash of your lifters to .030 if you have a hydraulic cam, or to .026 if you have a solid lifter cam, for this article we'll say that you have a hydraulic because they are the most common cams sold for street use.
So now that the valve covers are off of the car, you'll need to turn the crank of the engine until the two front valves on the right hand side are fully closed, and you must be absolutely sure that they are before you can begin to adjust them, or the entire job will be done wrong, this is very important.
They call this top dead centre, it's when the number one piston is at the top of it's stroke, and the timing line on your balancer is at the zero mark, this is the point where you can begin to adjust the lifters on the engine, I like to start out with number one just so I can keep track of where I'm at.
Now that you have number one at top dead center, you can begin to do the adjustment of the lifters, with the valves fully closed you need to take the feeler gauge and put it between the rocker arm and the valve stem, once you have put there it should feel a little stiff when you pull the feeler gauge out of from between the rocker arm and the valve stem, if should not slide easily, but should be a bit hard to pull on.
If it's not you need to loosen up the nut on top of the rocker arm with the 5/8 socket, and put the feeler gauge in between the valve stem and the rocker arm, and tighten it until it's seem a little stiff when you pull it out from between the valve stem and the rocker arm.
When your done adjusting the first two valves, you'd just move to the next two back and repeat the last two steps, you'd just repeat these steps until you have gone through all the valves on the engine, and wa-la your valves are now set perfectly.

Starter Clicks But Engine Does Not Turn Over - Tech in Trunk?
If the car's starter clicks and the engine does not turn over, this could be caused by several things. The most common cause of clicking when the car is being started is a low battery. Most people would assume that the starter is bad if it only clicks, but low-voltage can cause the starter to make this sound.
The battery is the heart of the starting and electrical system. If the battery has been drained or has a weak cell, this can cause the starter to only click. Many times the battery could just been drained due to a door left slightly open, making the dome light stay on. Other times a vanity light or a phone charger could be left on. During my time as a master auto technician, I've had a trustworthy co-worker close me up in the trunk so I could make sure the trunk light went off when the trunk was closed!
In order to test the battery it must have a good charge. If the battery is not charged completely the tester will indicate that it needs to be charged before testing can proceed. The first step when checking the starter and electrical system is to make sure the battery is in good condition. Most parts stores will check batteries for free. Once it's determined the battery is good the rest of the system can then be checked. Loose or corroded connections can also cause a clicking and for the car not to start.

Starter
The starter solenoid on many Ford vehicle's is on the inner fender well, on most other vehicles the starter solenoid will be mounted on the starter. The clicking that is heard many times is the solenoid. But low-voltage either from a drained battery, bad battery or poor connections can cause this. Most of the time if the vehicle can be jump-started the starter is okay. This would also indicate that the connections to the starter are good.
Alternator
Once the vehicle is running the alternator output can be checked. If the alternator is not charging the battery, it will be drained during the process of starting the car and driving. When the alternator is checked, the voltage and amperage output can be measured. Also the diode pattern will be checked to make sure the alternator won't drain the battery when the engine is turned off. In the past do-it-yourselfers could disconnect the battery while the vehicle is running to check the alternator, if the car kept running the alternator was good. Doing this on computerized vehicles can be harmful. If the battery is disconnected while a computerized vehicle is running the alternator output can increase sharply allowing excess voltage to spike the computer.
Battery
When purchasing a replacement battery the cold cranking amps required for the vehicle should be checked. It's best to purchase a battery with more cold cranking amps than the minimum required. Also when purchasing a battery you should consider if you want maintenance free or not. If the battery is hard to access or has a cover then a maintenance free battery is preferred. For instance on some Chrysler Sebrings and Chevrolet Corvettes the battery is located behind an inner fender and on a Chevrolet SSR. the battery is located underneath the bed where the spare tire would normally go. If installing the battery yourself be sure to notice which side is positive and negative in case you were sold the incorrect battery.
Terminals
The terminals should be free of corrosion and should tighten up well. Sometimes especially on import vehicles the battery terminals will be very thin and can have hairline cracks causing a poor connection. Avoid forcing the battery terminals on by tapping them. The battery casing can be damaged causing a leak, if the battery acid seeps out it can cause fast corrosion. If the battery terminal bolts will not tighten, then replacing the terminals is recommended. When the connections are tight you should not be able to twist them by hand.
